Having trained under the guidance of Olympian Andy McMillan, Gray has been steadily building an impressive resume of national titles and national age group records. His hard work and dedication paid off when he made his international debut at the FINA World Championships, where he competed in both the 50m Butterfly and the 200m Freestyle events. Although he finished 35th and 39th in those events respectively, his debut was an impressive display of his skills and marked the beginning of a promising career in international competition.

Gray's trajectory continued to soar as he competed in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where he once again raced in the 50m Butterfly. In the heats, he clocked a time of 24.02 seconds, qualifying as the 14th fastest swimmer for the semifinals. Gray's incredible form continued as he progressed to the semifinals, where he finished seventh with a time of 23.58 seconds, securing his place in the final. In the final, Gray proved to be a formidable opponent, swimming a time of 23.27 seconds to clinch the bronze medal.
