Laticia Transom
Laticia Transom is a New Zealand record holder and set to make her Olympic debut in Paris as part of the women's 4x200m freestyle relay.
Born in Palmerston North, Transom moved to Melbourne at age five. She started her swimming journey as a seven-year-old when her family moved to the Gold Coast. Just a year later, Transom started competitive swimming in Brisbane, where her junior and age group years were largely spent. Throughout this time, she enjoyed the occasional return to New Zealand for national competitions.
Transom treasures her early memories in swimming, including doing club nights with her sister and swimming in family relays with her parents. While she has always gravitated toward the sprint freestyle events, Transom loves to mix things up with backstroke.
The 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in The Bahamas saw Transom make her international debut, where she won two gold, two silver, and a bronze medal. Transom quickly debuted as Aquablack #264 at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, where she was a two-time individual semi-finalist and a part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle and medley relays that placed fourth and sixth respectively.
Transom headed over to the US in 2019 to swim collegiately while studying toward a Bachelor of Psychology. She spent four years at the University of Southern California, where she was an CSCAA All-American in the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay, courtesy of two seventh place finishes at the 2020 NCAA Division I Championships. She then moved onto the University of Hawai’i, where she became an All-American again after a seventh-place finish at the 2023 NCAA Division I Championships in the 100-yard freestyle.
After college, Transom returned to Brisbane and soon qualified for her second Aquablack team, earning a spot on the 4x200m freestyle relay for the 2024 World Aquatics Championships. Transom was an integral part of the team that went on to break the New Zealand record twice across heats and finals, finishing in fifth place and earning the country a quota spot for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
A second-place finish at the 2024 New Zealand Swimming Championships in Hawke’s Bay saw Transom qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as part of the 4x200m freestyle relay. She is looking forward to reaching the pinnacle of our sport in Paris, as well as testing out all the food as French cuisine is one of her favourites.
Transom represented Ice Breaker Aquatics for most of her swimming career before transferring to Club 37 in early 2024. Since returning from college, Transom trains under the guidance of Bobby Jovanovich at Brisbane Grammar School.
Outside of swimming, Transom is most inspired by the children that she currently works with at the Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. She aspires to pursue a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and one day open a private practice in New Zealand focused on helping provide more support for marginalised youth.
